The former TCAT campus at 1500 Arney Street is getting a face lift for the new cosmetology training program that begins in January 2019.
Online applications to enroll at TCAT Elizabethton are being received now while renovations near completion in Building Two, which previously housed nursing classrooms, tech foundations and a nursing computer lab.
The cosmetology program may be completed in 14 months. The cost of the course is approximately $4,500 for tuition and fees. Books and supplies will cost about $1,500.
Financial assistance will be available to students who qualify. The program also accepts Tennessee Promise and TCAT Reconnect scholarship grants, which offer two years of free tuition to attend TCAT Elizabethton after all other financial assistance has been applied.
The former classrooms used by nursing students in building Number Two at the Arney Street campus are being transformed with installation of cosmetology training equipment. Work stations, hair washing sinks and hair dryers are among features installed by students.
The setup for cosmetology training is giving TCAT students practical work experiences. TCAT students enrolled in electricity, plumbing, millwright, welding and HVAC have performed much of the work under the supervision of their instructor. Painting was done by Carter County trustees.
Cosmetology training is another example of on-the-job training offered by TCAT Elizabethton, according to College President Dean Blevins. “Certification of work ready training of students is a valuable asset offered by TCAT Elizabethton,” Blevins said.
The recognition began several several years in Tech Foundations at TCAT Elizabethton. At the time, the Tennessee Department of Labor provided funding to test all soon-to-be graduates at TCAT Elizabethton. The test measured student skill level and knowledge in their chosen field of study.
Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates were awarded, accordingly. The certificates were recognized by employers throughout the United States, Blevins said. Currently, Eastman Chemical Company requires the work-ready testing of new hires.
Blevins said the cosmetology training program provides the student with basic theory and clinical knowledge of the beauty industry through the use of approved textbooks, classroom instruction, and practical application with mannequins and live models.
